Vivre Sa Vie

From the June 2nd issue of the New Yorker, about Jean-Luc Godard's film, "Vivre Sa Vie":

"Nana is in despair because she cannot say exactly what she means and would prefer to say nothing rather than betray herself."

Claire's Knee

Claire's Knee is part of Eric Rohmer's "Six Moral Tales" series- a slow paced and subtle story of love and sexual obsession. I knew it was going to be slow and full of long wordy conversations, but I loved it anyway. It left me wishing I were 16 again, French, and spending the summer at a lake house in France. Style is iconic of the late 60's and early 70's.

The two young girls in the story, Laura and Claire, were slender and naturally beautiful running around in little clothing. Style was simple; mini dresses, basic t-shirts that hit low on the hips, floppy hats, and high waisted shorts worn with knee high socks- definitely an inspiration for my summer wardrobe...

Slave To Love

We LOVE love songs at Every Little Counts, especially those from the 80's, and especially those featured in favorite movies such as "Fire with Fire"

Here is "Slave to Love" by Bryan Ferry:

From Band of Outsiders:
"Odile is never at the same time sad and gay, gentle and happy, tender and distant, as people are in a normal psychological film.. She lives, on the contrary, each day as it comes, which she plunges into one after the other, rather than all at once, which is the sign of a simple and gentle heart."

Wild at Heart

There has been strange weather here in LA...wild wild winds, a few sprinkles or rain, and dark clouds that make working at home very cozy. Today, I took the morning off to watch David Lynch's Wild at Heart. Wild, crazy. creepy, sexy...perfect for a gloomy Friday morning.

Wise words from Stevie Nicks

"Personally, I think that sexy is keeping yourself mysterious"
-Stevie Nicks

This is my grandmother, Vivian. She tells great stories, teaches me to knit, and makes a mean mid-afternoon martini. She also gives advice:
When your man is coming home from work, and you don't feel like making dinner that night, open the door naked with two martini's in hand (one for you and one for him). By that time you are through, it will be too late to start dinner and he will take you out.

My Mom; Style Icon

Today is Mother's Day. Unfortunately, I am 3,000 miles away from my mom and I miss her! Despite my absence, she was quite happy to receive her exclusive t-shirt from Every Little Counts, made especially for her. I'm sure she will do a great job modeling it around Western Massachusetts.

In honor of Mother's Day, I thought I would do a post about my Mom as my style icon. I wish I had more photos of her here in LA, but this is all I have for now. Once I make another trip back home to Massachusetts, there will be more to be said of my mom as a style icon. She got me into old movies, vintage clothing, and yard sales- all of my favorite things!

This is what my Mom looks like now...beautiful as ever! The photo below was taken on my wedding day. She looks like a beauty queen!

Over the last few months I have become obsessed with It's like a radio station dictated by you and your tastes... and it's free! You can create stations by typing in the name of a song or an artist, and Pandora creates a station made up of similar songs. Genius! This is the perfect solution for me because I get bored so easily. I am tired of my ipod. I hate radio commercials. And I can't concentrate on listening to NPR while working. And it's rare that you can find Skid Row or Debbie Gibson on the radio these days. I am definitely guilty of some late nights singing along to my favorite old songs. It's sort of addicting.

Some of my favorite stations that I've created are:
The Bangles, which also includes songs by Tiffany, Madonna, Whitney Houston, and Starship.
Skid Row, which includes songs by Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Ratt, and AC/DC
The Carpenters, also including Elton John, Chicago, and Dionne Warwick
Heart, with Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, and Foreigner

But that is not all, they pretty much have everything.

I really miss movies like this...
Made in 1988 starring Justine Bateman, Julia Roberts, Trini Alvarado, Britta Phillips, Scott Coffey and Liam Neesan.
Justine Bateman's character Jennie Lee is the lead singer of this Bangles-like band, Mystery. The group spends the summer playing cover songs at a dive bar on the coast owned by Martin Falcon, played by Liam Neesan (who looks pretty sexy despite wearing linen beach-like pants). Justine Bateman looks beautiful in a natural 80's sort of way, although I had to cringe every time she sang really awful songs like "Mister Big Stuff" and "Iko Iko" . The music is pretty bad and Julie Roberts playing guitar made me laugh, but I still love this movie. Scott Coffey plays the recruited boy member of the band. I'm not sure many people remember Scott Coffey- but he also starred another one of my favorite girl movies, Shag. And then there is a cameo by Debbie Harry, although I don't think I would have recognized her in 1988. I was too young then, but not anymore...

In a Lonely Place

I've always had a thing for Humphrey Bogart. After seeing this movie over 10 years ago, this quote has always stuck with me:

"I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me."
