i heart duckie dale

One of my favorite quotes from Pretty in Pink...

"Well here's... here's the point, Andie. I'm not particularly concerned with whether or not you like me, because I live to like you and... and I can't like you anymore."

Top 5 with t8designs

This week, we asked Sam from t8designs to inaugurate our new feature here on the blog, Top 5 with...., where we ask influential and talented artists and designers about some of their favorite things.

Top Five Films of Love
1. Lars and the Real Girl - a family and community offer a mentally deluded young man compassion and help him discover love on his own terms
2. Once - ephemeral, unrequited, fateful interspersed with heartbreaking songs... we've all been there
3. My Left Foot - a mother's love and determination brings a major artist to the attention of the world
4. Paper Moon - grifters unite. love and chicanery bond a possible father/daughter combo in the midst of the great depression
5. The Thin Man- married and loving it. Nick and Nora (and Asta) Charles solve crimes with wit and style

Top Five Books
1. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsberg
2. Hideous Kinky by Esther Freud
3. Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman

4. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
5. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Top Five "Make-Out" Songs
1.  “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl” – Nina Simone

2.  “J T’aime moi Non Plus” – Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin
3.  “North Kensington” – The Lilac Time
4.  “Love Songs on the Radio” – Mojave 3

5.   "Empty"- Ray LaMontagne

Top Five Crushes of All Time
1.  Donald Sutherland – people are always surprised by this choice.  For those who do not understand you need to see his sex scene with Julie Christie in Nicholas Roeg’s “Don’t Look Now”.
2.  Jarvis Cocker – sexy mind, sexy voice, tall and lanky as I like ‘em

3.  Gram Parsons – gone too soon. RIP
4.  Terence Stamp (Poor Cow/Modesty Blaise/The Collector era…not so much in Priscilla Queen of  the Desert)

(Sidebar: I used to have a list I called my Septuagenarian Sex Club because I crush on primarily actors from the 60s who are now either dead or pretty gosh darn old)
5.  *Girlcrush*- Dolly Parton- I am envious of her talent and awed by her joie de vivre. She would be the #1 person on my dream party guest list.

Top Five Words to Describe Falling In Love:
1. Giddy
2. Altruistic
3. Anxious
4. Innocent
5. Insomniac

I just met Sam from t8designs in December, but she is already one of my favorite people in the world. I think we might share a brain. But before we met I had already fallen in love with her work. Her jewelry is all hand crafted from vintage flea market finds, so each piece is one of a kind, and constructed in a completely unexpected way. If you like something, you better get your hands on it fast, or it'll be gone forever.

These are some of my favorites:

I finally saw "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" over the weekend- it was a pleasant surprise I found on tv. I will watch anything with Natalie Wood, so I don't know why it took me so long to see it. I absolutely love watching films set in Los Angeles in the 60's & 70's.  The architecture and interior design is all so Slim Aarons-y....it just makes me swoon. So this is a satirical comedy set in the post hippie/ height of the sexual revolution era of the late 60's, starring Natalie Wood, Robert Culp, Dyan Cannon, and Elliott Gould. Pardon my occasionally blurry pictures...it's hard to get a good photo on the tv.

Natalie Wood looks impeccable as always, sporting some seriously fantastic bow ties and super sweet lingerie. Dyan Cannon looks so sweet and adorable with her perfectly polished wardrobe and bouffant ponytail tied up in a big bow. And well...the men, let's just say this wasn't the best era for men's fashion- it's a bit comical.

Toujours Tois & Family Affairs F/W 2010

I wrote about Family Affairs a few months ago after falling in love the moment I discovered the line via Sally Jane Vintage, so I was ecstatic when Nina (the daughter in the mother/daughter team) invited me to the F/W 2010 presentation herself. In conjunction with Family Affairs, Nina designs her own jewelry line, Toujours Toi. I could get lost in both websites for hours with the dreamy, romantic photographs combined with so many great musical and film references.

The F/W 2010 presentation, "Moon River" was held at the Swiss Institute in Soho, a reference to the company's transatlantic operation- Nina is based in New York, and her mother, Kaya is based in Switzerland. Upon entering, we were immediately engulfed in the world of Toujours Toi-Family Affairs.  Models languidly floated through the space bordered by a creative box installation playing cards, reading books, knitting, and playing with a bottles of dry ice. Backlighting clashed with projections of rural objects while folk, blues and ballads played on an old record player. The vibe was a little bit David Hamilton meets Virgin Suicides, which is easy to get lost in...and we did. The looks were a perfect mix of floaty floral feminine pieces, 1920's style drop waists, tailored pants & jackets, and A-line 60's style dresses.

(make sure to click around on their site, because a lot of the pieces from spring & fall '09 are still available and on sale!)
