watching: the lover

i have been meaning post on "the lover" by marguerite duras for awhile now.  i don't have much time now, so i will post more on this later, but for now... here are some stills from the film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud.

"I am worn out with desire for Helene Lagonelle.
I am worn out with desire.
I want to take Helene Lagonelle with me to where every evening, my eyes shut, I have imparted to me the pleasure that makes you cry out. I'd like to give Helene Lagonelle to the man who does that to me, so he may do it in turn to her. I want it to happen in my presence, I want her to do it as I wish, I want her to give herself where I give myself. It's via Helene Lagonelle's body, through it, that the ultimate pleasure would pass from him to me.
A pleasure unto death."
-Marguerite Duras, "The Lover"

I read The Lover when I was 15 and half years old, like Duras in the book.... Then during the next three years I read all of her books, screenplays, essays - mostly in French - seen the movies, everything... I was pretty obsessed indeed! Her work definitely shaped me.
My favorites of her still are Blue Eyes, Black Hair; Le Ravvisement de Lol V. Stein and The Sailor from Gibraltar. Moderato Cantabile is also a very special novel for me.

It's weird but a lot of her feminine characters are named Anna or Anne ;-)

Did you read anything else of her?

I love her books, pretty amazing french autor.

But the movie is so amazing, love the scene in the car. And Jane Marchs's outfit was great, I've got the whole music in my Ipod !

See U !
