Summer Lovers

It has been 95 degrees here in LA and it's starting to feel like summer. One of my all time favorite summer movies is Summer Lovers. Made in 1982, this film was the start for actors Peter Gallagher and Daryl Hannah, which could explain some full frontal nude scenes as well as a menage a trois involving olive oil. The film tells the story of a young American couple vacationing in Greece for the summer. They meet a young French woman, an archeologist, and stumble into an affair of sexual discovery. I love this movie mostly because it is shot in Greece, and it is absolutely stunning, but it also makes me nostalgic for the 80's (short high waisted shorts, natural beauty, and Nike cross trainers), and it's a little bit sexy. Embarrassing as it may be, this movie inspired my decision to choose Greece as my honeymoon destination with it's white villages, towering cliffs, and black sand beaches.

Apparently I am not the only one who has seen this movie because I stumbled upon a fan site today, http://www.summer-lovers.net/.

Reliving Childhood Crushes... Sebastian Bach

I am going to be 30 in a few months and I have been feeling pretty nostalgic. Watching Bret Michaels on Rock of Love got me thinking about childhood and how boy crazy I was. I did in fact have a huge crush on Bret, which makes me sad and a little sickened now that he is on Rock of Love dating girls that didn't even grow up listening to Poison. How could I be this old? I'm not sure I can even think about Bret anymore after seeing his face altered by so much plastic surgery. I no longer have a crush on Bret Michaels- but I definitely did in 3rd grade.

But...Sebastian Bach- HUGE crush. And now looking back at photos, if he still looked like that, I would still have a crush on him. Long blond hair. Tall. Skinny. Tight leather pants. I don't know how many times I watched the Monkey Business video over and over. There was just something about him in those tight pants on the train tracks. But it was not just Monkey Business- there was also Slave to the Grind, I Remember You, 18 and Life, In a Darkened Room, Quicksand Jesus.

I didn't get to see Sebastian play live until I was in college, sometime in the late 90's. It was a small club in Springfield, MA. It was amazing- shirtless in tight leather pants, looking older but not yet the man that would appear on the Gilmore Girls. He played old Skid Row songs, even though the band was broken up a the time. That night I met a guy that would drive my parents crazy, which was exactly what I was looking for. He was older. He was bald. He was tall and wore a leather jacket. He had many tattoos, one of which was an eyeball on the back of his head. It was summer. I was bored and rebellious. He would come pick me up in his big black pickup truck. Of course my parents hated him. Perfect! When the summer was over, I went back to dating nice emo boys.

Brief Encounter

Brief Encounter

After watching America's Next Top Model, like I do every Wednesday, I decided to watch something actually worth watching- "Brief Encounter" by David Lean. It is a simple but realistically honest story of an illicit romance set in 1945 Britain. From a chance meeting on a train platform, a middle-aged doctor (Trevor Howard) and a suburban housewife (Celia Johnson) enter into a quiet yet passionate love affair, knowing there's no possibility for a lasting relationship. The two meet every Thursday at a small café at the station to play out their doomed romance.
I have stressed myself out quite a bit, trying to describe how this movie made me feel. It is just a simple, beautiful, romantic, and yet practical story. Unlike most Hollywood movies, you can see the two characters falling in love before your eyes and it is completely believable, despite the fact their affair lasted only a matter of weeks. It makes you think twice about love, marriage, and obligation. Would their love affair be as interesting if they ended up together in the end?

Let Me Hear Your Body Talk

Olivia Newton-John: Style Icon of the 70's and 80's.

High waisted jeans, blonde feathered hair, tight pants and high heels, legwarmers and headbands, off the shoulder sweatshirts. She was sweet and she was sexy.

"Physical" by Olivia Newton-John was one of my very first records. I have very clear childhood memories of playing it in my bedroom on my Care Bear record player. This was the 80's- the era of Jane Fonda and aerobics. I can still see my mom running off to at Figures & Fitness in her leotard and tights, wishing I could go with her. I am a little nostalgic for this look, although at the same time, happy that it has passed. This look does not work for everyone, but it worked for Olivia!

Any great road trip should include a sing along to "Magic: The Very Best of Olivia Newton-John" contains her best hits. Favorite tracks include: I Honestly Love You, Magic, Xanadu, Make a Move on Me, Heart Attack, and of course, Physical.

Fire with Fire

Slave to Love...

My first memory of "Slave to Love" by Bryan Ferry is from a widely unseen movie called "Fire with Fire", made in 1986, starring Virginia Madsen and Craig Scheffer. This movie was the inspiration for "Slave to Love" from my Spring '08 "In the Mood for Love" collection.
Teen Romance. Rebellion. Catholic uniforms. Love songs! Better than any John Hughes movie. If you haven't seen it already, see it! Unfortunately, it is pretty hard to find. It has not been released to DVD.

150 Love Letters You Were Never Meant to See

150 Love Letters You Were Never Meant to See
by Bill Shapiro

This book makes me want to travel 3,000 miles away so I can run back to my old childhood room and dig through my closet to find my old love letters. I imagine staying up all night reliving old memories of young love- crazy, passionate, disillusioned love. I want to read all of my old journals chronicling each and every day of desire and anxiety, lusting after the quiet boy in the hallway. I want to relive those days in high school English class staring at "him" from across the room while discussing the works of Walt Whitman and William Wordsworth. I want to feel, again, what it was finally like to stay up all night laying next to him, kiss him for the first time, to feel like I was falling in love, and then to ultimately be crushed when he dumped me.

It is now 10 years later and I am married. I have found my match and these boys that I think of from the past are in my thoughts now to entertain me, to bring me back to a time when I was innocent and dreaming. It's been a long time since I have stayed up all night.

This book makes me want to write love notes more often- written to be left in strange places for others to find.
