this is glamour

i love this woman - stylist of all stylists, catherine baba
she is my new inspiration. forget this 70's natural "ali macgraw" thing i was onto for awhile. bring on the turban, the chunky jewelry, the lipstick, and the kimono. it's going to be all glam, all the time.
well, maybe not, but it's a nice idea. i'm much too moody to go for one look all the time, but i am definitely feeling this look for right now.
don't you think she looks a little like anais nin?

everyone i have ever slept with...

Keeping going with the art theme of the past couple posts...this piece is by British artist, Tracey Emin- whose work is centered around unflinchingly sharing the details of her sexual and sensual life.

Probably her most well-known work is Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995,  a tent appliquéd with 102 names of the people she had slept with up to the time of its creation in 1995. Some people have criticized her for her objective stance on her own life, but I like the following quote from her about this piece:
"Some I'd had a shag with in bed or against a wall, some I had just slept with, like my grandma. I used to lay in her bed and hold her hand. We used to listen to the radio together and nod off to sleep. You don't do that with someone you don't love and don't care about."
-Tracey Emin

See?  It's nice.

jack pierson: desire, lust, romance

so... jack pierson- he's an artist & a photographer that i happen to get into from time to time. there is definitely more to pierson than what you see here, but these are a few of the pieces i was looking at when designing our first collection for Every Little Counts...that whole desire, lust, romance thing. we're coming upon our 2 year anniversary so i'm getting a little sentimental.

"Pierson’s work has long embodied sensations of nostalgia and melancholia, memory and loss."

ophelia

do all girls go through an ophelia phase? i personally had the millais version hanging in my bedroom as a teenager. but my favorite ophelia association is from the little seen, "Fire with Fire" starring Virginia Madsen & Craig Scheffer, my favorite 80's romance of all time. seriously. she's a catholic schoolgirl & he's an inmate at a neighboring juvenile detention facility. they meet in the woods when she is taking self portraits referencing ophelia drowning in the river.
here's a weird video edit from youtube-

lost in love, again.

NEW!!! i've been wanting to do prints for awhile now, but i am usually so wrapped up in business as usual to spend much time on experimenting. but here we have it- 2 limited edition "lost in love" prints just in time for valentine's day.

so this is graphic was inspired by my love for air supply- yes, i am not afraid to admit it. i've been loving them for a long, long time.  we originally did this print last year as part of our "love song" collection  (there's still 2 pieces left! AND a tote bag)- sometimes i just can't stop myself!  in case, god forbid, you have never heard this song, perhaps you are too young to know- listen here.

the bed's too big without you

i always thought "every breath you take" was my favorite Police song...that was until i grew up and heard this song. this song is my favorite. again, it was on that very first mix tape my husband made me back in the day when we were living on separate coasts, sleeping in separate beds. watch the video it's pretty awesome.

I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend

my favorite Ramones song- well maybe 2nd favorite, but this one is more appropriate for our countdown to valentine's day. my real favorite Ramones song is "i just wanna have something to do"

there was just something about joey ramone- he had the whole ugly/ sexy thing going on. i don't know how he pulled it all off, but he did. and then, really- doesn't johnny ramone have the best bowl cut? i'm a little jealous. and they were all onto that stripe shirt/ skinny jean look before any of us.

and now i will just say, if you haven't seen Rock n' Roll High School- please do.

pissing in a river

Nick Hornby describes "Pissing in a River" by Patti Smith as one of  the 31 songs that have provided a soundtrack to his life.

I have to agree. I first heard this song from the scene above in "All Over Me" starring Allison Folland & Tara Subkoff- way before Imitation of Christ. This film is sort of a riot grrrl- era, gritty, coming- of- age story set in New York's Hell's Kitchen, released in 1997. This film was huge for me....so real, honest, heartbreaking and so late-90's. This is probably the most memorable film for me during that time period- in the likes of Welcome to the Dollhouse and Foxfire.  When I first saw it, I had just graduated high school and was in my first year of college- falling in and out of love and highly emotional. I spent a lot of time laying in bed, staring up at the ceiling, listening to this song. I kinda miss those days...

(other than a largely unknown at the time Tara Subkoff, look for Wilson Cruz- of My So-Called LIfe, Leisha Hailey of the Murmors- The L Word- and those Yoplait commercials,  and Mary Timony from Helium)

When I fell in love with Anna Karina...

So, in continuing the Every Little Counts anniversary themes (the company, not the blog), we thought we'd share with you this scene from one of our favorite movies, like, ever. Jean-Luc Godard's Band A Part (Band of Outsiders) is pretty well known to fans of French New Wave film, 60's style or Anna Karina, so we won't bore you with the details. This dance is called the Madison, we think, and we would like to say: it is, like, impossible to do! That cross the leg/snap the finger/swing the arm part - always gets away from us...

Don't you wish you could spend all day watching movies?

(Oh, and if you didn't already see the new Spring '10 collection, "A Girl in Love"...check it out here and look for Anna Karina)

i always write about and post about things i love and things that influence me, but in honor of the 2 year of Every Little Counts, i am trying to get down to the core elements of where i am coming from. my love for  pj harvey is definitely a big part of where i am coming from. i don't listen to her as much as i used to, but my love for her is the same. back when i was single and living on my own i would listen to her over and over...

New Order - Every Little Counts

We're having an anniversary! We (sort-of) officially started Every Little Counts on Valentine's Day two years ago so we decided to have a total schmaltzy love-fest of a countdown with a few surprises thrown in.

Today is Day 1, so it only seems natural to explain where we got the name, Every Little Counts. A lot of people get it confused...always calling us "Every Little Bit Counts" or "Every Little Thing Counts", but that's not it at all! This is "Every Little Counts" by New Order. We sort of obsess over New Order- the music, the graphic design, the history (formerly Joy Division), everything. Adam put this song on the very first mix tape he made for me back when we first started dating. I had never heard it before- since it was never one of their most popular songs, but I would listen to it over and over...and later we danced to it at our wedding, in front of grandparents and everything. So there it is- that's the story.

(p.s..there's still time to get 20% off the new spring styles- soon to be released- click here)

Toto!

Did you know "Rosanna" was named after Rosanna Arquette? She briefly dated Toto member, Steve Porcaro...hence, the song. I'm still trying to figure out why she would have dated one of these guys. I've had my fair share of perhaps shameful crushes back in the day, but I just can't get into these guys. Although I do love this song...and who could forget "Africa"- another favorite.

Watching: Desperately Seeking Susan

The most influential movie in style to come out of the 80's...for me anyway. Hard to believe it's 25 years old!

eric rohmer

One of my favorite filmmaker's died today- Eric Rohmer, at age 89. He was one of the founders of French New Wave cinema- right up there with Godard and Truffaut. If you haven't seen any of his films, here are a few of my favorites....all simple, beautiful, and smart.
