roadtrip: day 5

Waking up to snow on the ground in downtown Omaha. Neither of us prepared for snow when we were packing, but at least we got to use the seat warmers properly in the car.

The Farmers Market @ The Old Market in Omaha.

Wheatfields Bakery, Omaha.
This caramel bread pudding looked ridiculous, but we settled for a oversize cinnamon bun which kept us feeling full forever.

Snow on the ground in Nebraska.

Kum & Go..really?? Who thought that was a good idea? But they were all over Iowa.

Parts of Illinois look exactly like Iowa....corn, corn, and more corn.

And then it became autumn again.

Obsessively taking pictures from the passenger seat.

Finally, we made it to Chicago!
After many nights staying in motels where we were afraid to even walk on the floor, we indulged and booked a room at the Westin by the airport. We had plans to go out into Chicago for some pizza, but after settling in we were too tired and lazy to leave. Luckily we found a pizza place to deliver...Giordano's- world famous stuffed pizza! Of course, after about one piece we were too full to even look at it...but we did it, cross it off the list, we had Chicago style pizza.
And now I am in a rush to get out of here before check out time, so more on this later...

roadtrip: day 4

today we took on nebraska...
we stumbled upon this gas station junkyard in pine bluffs, wyoming while looking for the lady of peace shrine. unfortunately she was only accessible by dirt road. we were afraid we would pop a tire so we left, defeated. but the junkyard was worth it.

this is nebraska- flat, but very beautiful.

my favorite nebraska find: the fort cody trading post. we were lured in by the 30 ft. tall sign of Buffalo Bill.

The home of Buffalo Bill

an original pony express station in gothenburg, ne

sod house museum. gothenburg, ne.
it was closed by the time we got there.

nearing omaha, ne. again- we didn't get to our destination until after dark. just in time for a late, late dinner at Jaipur Brewing Company- and indian restaurant and a brewery?!
and now, another night in a motel...

roadtrip: day 3

we didn't have internet access last night, so we are now a day behind in our road trip blog adventures. so this is from yesterday...

we woke up in elko, nevada to hear word that we might be approaching snow. 6-12" of snow was expected to fall in parts of wyoming and nebraska- just where we would be headed. we had already woken up to frost on the car, but snow in october?! we were a little worried, but we still had to get through utah...

the bonneville salt flats, utah

me taking pictures of adam taking pictures at the bonneville salt flats.

driving along listening to the mojave 3...
"love songs on the radio, his sweetheart lies in bed, she's dreaming of the things he said, she's hoping that he's well"

approaching park city, utah...we felt as though we were in the sound of music.
we stopped for a late lunch of veggie burgers (again) and drinks, enjoyed the crisp autumn breeze, and discovered you can not get an alcoholic drink in utah without ordering some sort of food. hmm...gelato with our wine and beer? weird but worth it for the view from the stein eriksen lodge.

stunning, mind- blowing landscape.

the sun set just as we crossed over into wyoming. and with that, we crossed time zones and jumped ahead an hour.

we drove and drove until we arrived in cheyenne just after midnight. we were lucky enough to snag a room at the historic plains hotel- western themed to the nth degree. it was pretty awesome...exactly what i was looking for. (and sal mineo has stayed there. i love sal mineo).

roadtrip: day 2

we treated ourselves to a night in carmel, ca. it was so beautiful, quiet, and woodsy- we didn't want to leave.

spur of the moment stop in auburn, ca...and old mining town. so cute.

totally want to start my own happy hour club.

drove through crazy, amazing, sort of scary donner pass. i had never heard of the donner party, but adam gave me the lowdown- a group of american emigrants back in the 1800's who had become snowbound in the sierra nevada, who have famously become known for their cannibalism.

photos taken from the car do not do it justice. it was beautiful, scary, and incredible.

reno, not very exciting. we drove in. we drove out.

a truck stop outside of reno. casinos are everywhere.

after we had been driving into the nothingness of nevada for quite some time we were worried we were never going to find a place to eat dinner. and then we found lovelock. we ate some very cheesy pizza from the pizza factory, whose slogan is "we toss 'em, they're awesome"

handicraft inside the bathroom at the pizza factory.

late night driving listening to beck, the clash, and iggy & the stooges.
the moon was pretty amazing tonight.

roadtrip: day 1

It took 13 hours, 4 movers, and the two of us to finally move out of our LA apartment. We've accumulated a lot of stuff after 6 years. A LOT of stuff. It was a long day, a much longer day than expected. We didn't even get out on the road until 11pm. First we had to stop by for a late night dinner at our favorite Echo Park institution, The Brite Spot. Unfortunately, we were so deliriously tired we didn't make it too far...

The bedspread at the Motel 6 in Thousand Oaks. Scariness.

Driving along the Californian coast...beyond stunning. The perfect way to say goodbye to California.

Big Sur. I was totally bummed to see the Henry Miller Library was closed.

We couldn't resist stopping for a quick drink at Nepenthe in Big Sur. Stunning! I love Big Sur. I was sort of sad to leave...

Late night driving.

updates

we leave for our cross country road trip tomorrow! after 6 years in LA, it's hard to believe the day has actually come, but we are going back home!

we will still be accepting orders, but we will be unable to process them until we are settled in brooklyn. once we get there, we will be launching the new fall/ winter line, "untamed youth". after that, we will not be taking anymore custom orders for "wild at heart". if you see something you like, you better snatch it up now.

because i am completely obsessed- i will be checking my email while we are out on the road, hopefully blogging, and definitely twittering. if you have any road trip suggestions- send me a message. we will be going up from LA to San Francisco and over on 80 to NYC. in my 2 previous trips cross country, i have never done this route so i am very excited.

follow our adventures on twitter! http://twitter.com/averyshygirl

i wish i could write more...but i have to get back to cleaning & packing. it's so painful to throw so much away!
