lovers on the run: vol. 6

"It's not gonna mean anything if we don't make it together"

Ok, this is the last of the lovers on the run series.  The Getaway has extra special meaning for me since Adam & I did a project together (back in his days in the CalArts MFA program) which involved the two of us, a video camera, and some dialogue from this movie. But in any case- The Getaway...Steve McQueen is "Doc" McCoy (need I say more) and Ali MacGraw is his wife Carol- looking flawless and chic- even when crawling around in a dumpster.  There's a bank robbery, there's bad guys, double crossing, and car chases...but somehow they make it out alive.

p.s..watch out for the surprising cute but annoying Sally Struthers.

lovers on the run: vol. 5

"You didn't believe we'd always be in love."

Pierre le Fou! Jean- Luc Godard! Anna Karina! Jean- Paul Belmondo! Totally weird and bizarre, but I'm into it.

"I never told you I'd love you all my life. Oh my love, you never swore to adore me all your life. We never made promises like that, knowing me knowing you. We never thought we ever would be caught by love fickle as we were. And yet, and yet, step by step, without a word between us, bit by bit, feelings slipped between our merry mingle bodies and words of love rose to our naked lips. Bit by bit lots of words of love began to mingle gently with our kisses. How many words of love? I never would have thought I'd always want you. Oh my love, we never would have thought we two could live together and not get bored. Wake up every morning and be just as surprised to be just as happy in the same bed, desire nothing more than that oh so banal pleasure of feeling so good to be together. And yet, and yet, step by step without a word between us, bit by bit our feelings bound us tight in spite of ourselves, bound us tight forever Feelings stronger than any words of love known or unknown. Feelings so wild and so strong. Feelings we never thought were possible before. Don't ever promise to adore me all your life. Let's not make promises like that knowing me knowing you. Let's keep the feeling that this love of ours, this love of ours, will be short and sweet."

lovers on the run: vol. 4

"The strangest damned gang you ever heard of. They're young. They're in love. They rob banks."

So obvious. But so good.

"You've heard the story of Jesse James / Of how he lived and died / If you're still in need / Of something to read / Here's the story of Bonnie and Clyde. / Now Bonnie and Clyde are the Barrow gang / I'm sure you all have read / How they rob and steal / And those who squeal / Are usually found dyin' or dead. / They call them cold-hearted killers / They say they are heartless and mean / But I say this with pride / That I once knew Clyde / When he was honest and upright and clean. / But the laws fooled around / Kept takin' him down / And lockin' him up in a cell / Till he said to me: "I'll never be free / So I'll meet a few of them in Hell." / If a policeman is killed in Dallas / And they have no clue to guide / If they can't find a fiend / They just wipe their slate clean / And hang it on Bonnie and Clyde / If they try to act like citizens / And rent them a nice little flat / About the third night / They're invited to fight / By a sub-guns' rat-a-tat-tat. / Some day, they'll go down together / They'll bury them side by side / To a few, it'll be grief / To the law, a relief / But it's death for Bonnie and Clyde."

lovers on the run: vol. 2

"He wanted to die with me and I dreamed of being lost forever in his arms."

"Our time with each other was limited and each lived for the precious hours when he or she could be with the other, away from all the cares of the world."

"Kit made a solemn vow that he would always stand beside me and let nothing come between us. He wrote this out in writing, put the paper in a box with some of our little tokens and things, then sent it off in a balloon he'd found while on the garbage route. His heart was filled with longing as he watched it drift off. Something must've told him that we'd never live these days of happiness again, that they were gone forever."

Badlands is one of our favorite movies from the "lovers on the run" series, a twisted but beautifully shot and narrated story of man (Kit) who goes on a multi-state killing spree, while seducing a young girl (Holly) to come along with him.  Long, sad shots of the empty, empty midwest, strange and violent interactions with the townspeople, and a haunting voice-over narrative by Sissey Spacek make this a very poetic film.  Holly's naive and romantic comments take everything we see on the screen and turn into a moving, innocent journey.  At the end, though, Holly leaves us only with Kit's violence, and the illusion of love is shattered.  The style in this film is great - the 1950's as seen through the 1970's, and the gauzy, hazy shots make it all seem like a dream...
